Laws that deny our right to self-defense criminalize law-abiding citizens – Shaw Local

Terrible things have been done when guns are used by bad people. The terror of school shootings and child murders is monstrous. Our news agencies do a credible job of reporting these all-too-frequent events. However, the hundreds of lives saved each year by gun owners rarely make the headlines. These intentional omissions support the ongoing media narrative that guns are only used for evil.

A contrary view was held by those wise men who wrote our Constitution. Also, by millions of Americans today. It is no coincidence that the right to bear arms comes after our right to freedom of expression. The Second Amendment gives us our only way to protect ourselves. Not just monsters from society, but from the government. The belief that government can be trusted to allow freedoms of speech, assembly, religion, redress of abuses or the right to personal property, without the people’s ability to defend themselves, ignores any awareness of human nature or the lessons of history.

Removing our ability to self-protect is surprisingly, dangerously silly and not the solution. On the contrary, other methods should be adopted. Do not allow any unauthorized entry into schools. Provide security through technology and trained and armed personnel. Repeal weapon-free zones that make schools defenseless targets. Elect judges and prosecutors who will lock up violent criminals. Fire those who put the monsters back on our streets. Laws that deny our right to self-defense will only criminalize law-abiding citizens. Monsters obey no laws.
