Baffert’s lawyer says deal has been made for Medina Spirit to appear in Preakness | Derby 147

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) – Bob Baffert’s foals, Medina Spirit and Concert Tour, will be allowed to compete in Saturday’s Preakness Stakes after an agreement has been made for the foals to undergo drug testing before the race.

There had been speculation whether the two would be allowed to race after Medina Spirit tested positive for betamethasone after the Kentucky Derby. Churchill Downs has decided to suspend Bob Baffert until a split sample from the original blood test returns from lab tests.

Maryland officials said pre-race samples of Baffert’s colt and filly Beautiful Gfit, who is entered to race in Friday’s Black Eyed Susan, were sent for testing today and the results are expected on Friday. If betamethasone is found in Medina Spirit or in a horse sample, the horse will be scratched.

Medina Spirit drew the No.3 post in the pole position toss and was installed as the favorite from the 9-5 morning line. Concert Tour will come out of 10th place and be the second choice 5-2, with Steve Asmussen’s Midnight Bourbon in 5th place with 5-1.

On Tuesday, Baffert said he found out that a skin ointment containing corticosteroid was given to Medina Spirit for dermatitis in the days leading up to the Kentucky Derby.

Craig Robertson, Baffert’s lawyer, said: “There are several conditions in place, including pre-race tests that the horses will have to pass and clear, which they (Pimlico) wanted and we wanted too, for clear out any cloud of preakness. So there are conditions in place, but we’ve come to an agreement for the two to race this weekend. “

A letter sent from Robertson to the Maryland Jockey Club and the Maryland Racing Commission acknowledges that Baffert agrees to allow the two foals – and Baffert Beautiful Gift filly, who is entered in the Black Eyed Susan Stakes on Friday – to be tested and that “if one of the three horses tests positive for a Prohibited Substance or at a level for an Authorized Therapeutic Substance that is above the Designated Limit, or if reasonable conditions warrant after MJC’s review of the medical records or administrative, Mr. Baffert or MJC on his name, will scratch this horse from the upcoming race in which this horse is entered this weekend in Pimlico. “

The Preakness draw is scheduled for Tuesday at 4 p.m.
